Application Development

End to End Application Development for a leading eyewear retailer

The Client:
The client is the leading high street retailer with total revenue for 2012/13 exceeding £1.7 billion. The company has more than 1,600 stores in 10 countries and well over 23 million registered customers worldwide.

The client is the largest retail provider of home delivery contact lens and retail dispenser of digital hearing aids in the United Kingdom and has been voted Britain’s most trusted opticians for 11 years running by Readers Digest, as well as raising millions for various charities across the globe.

The Situation:

The client planned to expand their store operations in multiple countries a few years ago and there was a need to do away with bulky / costly legacy applications that were earlier deployed for in-store retail and back-end transaction processing.

The customer therefore decided to modernize their bouquet of applications and define new business processes to match growing business needs.

Modernization and re-engineering required end to end development of their retail system. The new system was envisioned to vastly improve the customer experience and enable the client to reduce operating costs significantly.

The client wanted to outsource the project in order to assist them in successfully implementing and deploying the solution.

The Requirements

The client wanted a partner who could demonstrate:

  • Experience in managing large application development projects successfully through the entire development life cycle
  • Sound technology experience in Java / J2EE and Open Source frameworks
  • Sound understanding of retail business processes and workflows
  • Exceptional focus on quality and engineering processes
  • Mature framework for project management, governance and status reporting
  • Commitment to long term joint strategic initiatives
  • Cost effective, global delivery capability

The Solution

This was a critical project involving lot of complexities and required strong project management discipline along with good technical and business know how.

JKT’s solution architect’s designed the solution and delivered a Proof of Concept (POC) that showcased the Testroom module successfully. The new solution had simplified the process of capturing customer eye test details and made interfaces more intuitive for store users.

On successful completion of the POC a phased rollout was planned with multiple releases involving iterative model of development.

JKT utilized continuous integration and collaborative test driven design approach which proved to be extremely useful for reducing risk and tightening the feedback cycle by improving communication

Automation of Test Scripts for Unit Testing and System Integration Testing ensured optimum verification and validation leading to high quality

JKT utilized its immense domain experience in retail for modernizing the applications and improving store experience for employees as well as customers.
