The Client:
The client is one of America’s largest private companies and is an established leader in the petroleum marketing and fuel supply industries. Founded in 1957, the client provides comprehensive fuel supply, distribution, delivery, and dispensing solutions to customers through an integrated network of refiners, terminals, carriers, and retailers throughout North America. Today, they have a turnover exceeding US $7 Billion and deliver more than two billion gallons of fuel every year to clients throughout the continental United States.

The Situation:

The client’s organization has complex IT systems that are based on a number of bespoke and enterprise technologies to run their various lines of service. They have to seamlessly interface with customers, vendors, partners and suppliers for Order processing and Fulfilment process. While the business grew rapidly in the recent years, they continued to use old systems and manual means to implement business processes which were inefficient and occasionally faulty. Since time is of essence in the fast moving oil distribution & retailing business, the client faced a great challenge in improving its customer satisfaction and real time visibility of mission critical information for early decision making.

The Challenge:

The client decided to automate the overall business process by adopting a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) based solution which will use the latest ESB features to integrate all internal applications with the legacy ERP. The solution would also create an architecture which will allow integration with external (third party) applications hence provide a fast, reliable and robust way to meet the fast changing market requirements. The overall solution required:

  • Integration of all internal applications
  • Integration with all external applications from customers, vendors and suppliers
  • Legacy integration through BizTalk
  • ESB based solution

The client’s IT work was managed in house using an array of boutique companies to provide extra skills to help meet the project needs. They were finding it increasingly difficult to acquire and retain skilled technical consultants due to shortage of quality resources available locally. Their business required IT to undertake this project without affecting the standard Run and Maintain operations.

The Client’s Requirement:

The client decided to engage an IT Services partner who could provide domain skills in Microsoft technology and offer a scalable flexible engagement model to help them improve services, quality and cost efficiency. They insisted on a Microsoft accredited partner who could demonstrate sound expertise in implementing SOA based solutions using Microsoft BizTalk and also support their strategic migration to Microsoft architecture using .NET (WCF, ASP .NET, WPF), SQL BI (SSRS, SSIS, SSAS), DBA activities and SharePoint. With an eye to the future, they also wanted the partner who could take responsibility for applications management.

The Solution:

Adhering to Client’s management strategy and project planning JKT consultants implemented a SOA based solution which included:

  • An itinerary based solution on ESB architecture using BizTalk
  • Rule Store for generating reports fully configurable by the business user
  • Transition all third party application standards to internal standards of the client’s organization.
  • EBOL (electronics bill of lading) directly imported to internal systems (ERP, SQL etc)
  • Orders generated directly in the old ERP system using external parties Flat Files/ XML
  • BizTalk Application for importing EDIs and processing data

This success resulted in a large team engaged on delivering solutions for Application Development, QA, Testing and Maintenance across multiple technologies. Additionally, JKT leveraged our global delivery capabilities to migrate the majority of work to one of our Advanced Development Centres.

What was Achieved:

TThe client were able to respond to their mission critical IT challenge by implementing a SOA based solution which was able to cope up with the business demands and growth. By leveraging JKT offshore presence, they were able to substantially increase throughput without increasing IT spend. The client found in JKT a flexible partner who offered secure offshore delivery capabilities together with a well-trained pool of resources able to support the demands for a complete architecture revamp. In addition, JKT made significant contributions in improving the software development processes and overall software quality.
