JKT helps improve the operational responsiveness of an established petroleum marketing & fuel supply
The client is one of America’s largest private companies and is an established leader in the petroleum marketing and fuel supply industries. Founded in 1957, the client provides comprehensive fuel supply, distribution, delivery, and dispensing solutions to customers through an integrated network of refiners, terminals, carriers and retailers throughout North America. Today, the client has a turnover exceeding US $7 Billion and delivers more than two billion gallons of fuel every year to clients throughout continental United States.
The client has complex IT systems based on a number of bespoke and enterprise technologies to run their various lines of service. The nature of their business requires IT to have the flexibility to swiftly scale up and down to meet changeable business demands without affecting the standard run and maintain operations. To meet this fluctuating demand, IT work was managed in house using an array of boutique companies to provide extra skills to help meet the project needs. However, they were finding it increasingly difficult to acquire and retain skilled technical consultants due to unavailability of skilled resources locally. This combined with the cost of hiring plus increasing pressure to deliver more with a reduced IT budget only added to the IT department’s challenges. The client decided to engage an IT Services partner who could provide domain skills and offer a scalable flexible engagement model to help them improve services, quality and cost efficiency.
The client wanted an IT Services partner who offered a flexible staff augmentation service with an expert pool of multiple technical skills including Progress and Microsoft products. They were determined to improve quality and required a partner with global delivery capability, industry best practices and accreditations. They insisted on a partner who could demonstrate an exceptional focus on quality to meet their exacting business requirements. With an eye to the future, they also wanted the partner who could take responsibility for applications management.
The client wanted a partner who could demonstrate capability and credibility to:
- Offer a flexible global delivery service
- Provide skilled & qualified resources in Progress & Microsoft technologies
- Ramp-up and down the team to mirror project demands
- Deliver an effective resourcing plan to manage recruitment, retention and rotation
- Establish and maintain a knowledge retention repository and procedures
- Engage in a long term joint governance of the service
- Contribute to the success of their IT
Initially, JKT were engaged to demonstrate their in-depth Progress skills by reviewing the structure, architecture and design of their core application and recommend performance enhancements. They accepted the findings and engaged JKT to provide a small team of Progress consultants to implement the recommendations and also to assist in new development projects. As the relationship matured, the client requested JKT to support their strategic migration to Microsoft architecture and ramp up the team with technology specialists on .NET (WCF, ASP .NET, WPF), SQL BI (SSRS, SSIS, SSAS), DBA activities, SharePoint, and BizTalk. This resulted in a large team engaged on delivering solutions for Application Development, QA, Testing and Maintenance across both technologies. Additionally, JKT leveraged our global delivery capabilities to migrate the majority of work to one of our Advanced Development Centres.
The client was able to flex their IT resourcing to keep up with business demands and growth. By leveraging JKT’s offshore presence, client was able to substantially increase throughput without increasing IT spend. The client found in JKT a flexible partner who offered secure offshore delivery capabilities together with a well trained pool of resources able to support the demands for a complete architecture revamp.
In addition, JKT made significant contributions in improving the software development processes and overall software quality.
