Everyone’s heard some version of the AI jobs story by now. Machines taking over, headcounts shrinking, entire teams quietly disappearing. It’s the narrative that gets clicks. Turns out it’s also mostly wrong, at least according to the data.
PwC dropped its 2026 Global AI Jobs Barometer recently, and it’s a genuinely massive dataset. Over a billion job listings, 27 countries. Not a survey where people guess how they feel about AI. Actual hiring behavior, tracked at scale.
And the numbers don’t match the panic.
Companies that lean hardest into AI aren’t shedding jobs faster than everyone else. They’re adding them faster. The most AI-exposed businesses grew their headcount by 52%, compared to 36% at companies that moved slower. Pay followed the same pattern, up 24% versus 17%.
Sit with that for a second. The companies people assume are automating their way to smaller teams are actually the ones growing the fastest.
Some Companies Aren’t Just Winning, They’re Lapping Everyone
Now here’s where it gets a little wild. Look at just the top 20% of AI-exposed companies and their productivity jumped 163%. Not a typo. That’s almost five times higher than the average gain across AI-exposed businesses generally.
So it’s not really an “AI companies vs non-AI companies” story anymore. It’s a much smaller group of companies figuring something out that most haven’t, and pulling way ahead because of it.
What’s that something? Not just buying the tools. Every competitor has access to roughly the same AI tools at this point. The difference seems to come down to who’s actually letting people use them well.
Demand for AI Skills Is Outpacing Everything Else, By a Lot
Job postings asking specifically for AI skills grew 69% year over year. The broader job market? Up just 9%. That’s close to an eightfold gap, which is a strange thing to see in labor data that usually moves at a crawl.
Naturally, pay is following demand. Workers with AI skills are commanding a 62% wage premium now, up from 57% the year before. That’s not a small bump. Companies are actively bidding up the price of people who can work with this technology, which tells you something about how real the shortage is.
But the More Interesting Finding Isn’t About AI Skills At All
This is the part that got buried in most of the coverage, and it’s honestly the most useful bit.
PwC split jobs into two categories. “Democratised” roles are jobs where AI makes it easier for someone with less experience to step in and do the work. “Professionalised” roles are ones where AI handles the repetitive stuff, freeing the person up to focus on judgment calls, strategy, the parts of a job that are genuinely hard to automate.
The professionalised roles are growing roughly twice as fast, both in job count and pay. Which makes sense once you think about it. Once AI clears out the busywork, what’s left is the stuff that actually needs a person with good instincts.
Even entry-level hiring is bending this direction. In the US, AI-exposed entry-level roles are now seven times more likely to require skills that used to only show up in senior job listings. These roles grew 35% since 2019, while more traditional entry-level positions actually shrank by 10% over the same stretch.
So What Does This Actually Mean If You’re Running a Business
Probably not “buy more AI tools.” That’s the easy, lazy takeaway, and it’s not what the data supports.
The companies pulling ahead aren’t just deploying AI. They’re pairing it with people who know how to use it and giving those people room to apply judgment where it counts. Technical fluency matters, sure. But so does the human side, the thinking, the leadership, the stuff a model still can’t fake convincingly.
If there’s one thing worth taking from this report, it’s that the gap between companies doing AI well and everyone else isn’t shrinking. It’s getting wider. And the businesses closing that gap aren’t the ones cutting people. They’re the ones investing in them.
