Scientists Built Robots So Tiny They Can Bully Bacteria Around

A team of scientists in Würzburg, Germany looked at a drop of water full of bacteria and decided the real problem was that nobody had built something small enough to push them around. So they built one. Well, thousands of one. At this size “one robot” isn’t really a thing, you make a whole batch or you don’t bother.

They’re calling them nanorobots. Which sounds cooler than what they actually are, because there’s no motor inside, no propeller, nothing spinning. If you’re picturing something with little arms and wheels, stop, that’s not this. What powers these things is light. Just light and a clever little trick.

Okay so here’s the weird part. Light pushes back when it bounces off something. Every time one of these robots takes in a bit of light and sends it back out in a certain direction, it gets nudged the other way, kind of like how a gun kicks back when it fires. One bit of light barely moves anything. But the robots are so small and light themselves, something like 50 times smaller than a strand of hair, that the push is enough to send them zipping around. They can even turn sharp corners without slowing down much.

Steering is the trickier part though. The robots have tiny wires built in that naturally line up with the direction the light is pointing. Turn the light one way, and the robot turns with it, kind of like a compass needle, except this compass needle is also the getaway car. Add in the push from the light and you basically get something that steers like a tiny remote-control car, except the remote is a beam of light and the car is too small to see without a strong microscope.

So what’s it for, a robot this small? Cleaning, it turns out. The team, led by Bert Hecht, used these things to chase down bacteria floating in water, grab hold of them, drag them somewhere else, and let go. Lead researcher Jin Qin put it simply: they built a robot powered by light that hunts down and picks up bacteria. Nothing’s stuck on permanently either. Change the light and the robot lets go, ready to grab the next one.

They stay easy to steer even carrying a full load, just a bit slower, kind of like a delivery guy on a bike carrying more bags than he should. The team keeps calling it a nanoscale cleaning crew. Go through the sample, gather up whatever’s floating around, drop it somewhere tidy. That’s the whole job.

Why bother moving bacteria around for a living? Fair question. But think about it for a second and it starts to make sense. Scientists have wanted to touch and move things in the tiny, invisible world for decades now, the same way you’d pick something up off a table. Tweezers don’t work at that size. Chemicals get messy and hard to control. A robot that can grab one single bacterium without hurting it opens up a lot of doors, sorting cells, cleaning up dirty samples, organizing tiny cultures with a level of control that used to only exist in movies.

Nobody’s using these outside a lab anytime soon, to be clear. Still, it’s a strange thing to sit with, that somewhere right now, a robot too small to see is following a beam of light through a drop of water, picking up bacteria one at a time, and putting them exactly where it’s told to.
