We’ve all done it. The second Netflix starts buffering, we blame the internet provider. Fair enough, right? Except a lot of the time, your broadband has nothing to do with it.
Wi-Fi is just a radio signal making its way from your router to whatever device you’re holding. And like any radio signal, it doesn’t get a free pass through your house. It runs into things. Gets absorbed, deflected, sometimes stopped cold, by stuff you probably never think twice about.
Concrete walls are an obvious culprit, everyone knows that one. But some of the others catch people off guard. Your microwave, for instance, can mess with your signal the whole time it’s running. Even a big fish tank can drag your speeds down, because water is oddly good at soaking up radio waves.
Metal is another sneaky one. Fridges, filing cabinets, that oversized mirror in your hallway, they won’t necessarily kill your Wi-Fi outright, but they’ll bounce it around in directions you don’t want. Instead of a clean line to your laptop, the signal ricochets off, and you end up with weird dead zones or speeds that dip for no obvious reason.
And then there’s everything else we’ve packed into our homes over the years. Bluetooth speakers, smart plugs, baby monitors, wireless headphones, cordless phones. None of these is a big deal on its own. But throw them all together and they’re basically fighting over the same slice of radio spectrum, especially that overcrowded 2.4 GHz band.
Weather plays a role too, just not the way people assume. Rain isn’t reaching into your living room and slowing things down. What it can do is mess with the outdoor equipment or satellite links that bring the internet to your house in the first place.
The fix, honestly, is usually easier than people think. Get the router out of that corner it’s been shoved into. Keep it away from the fridge or filing cabinet. Put it somewhere central instead of tucked behind the TV. If your place is big or the walls are thick, a mesh system might solve more than upgrading your internet plan ever would.
It’s tempting to jump straight to “I need a faster plan.” Sometimes that’s the answer. But before you spend more money, take a look at what’s actually sitting around your router. The real problem might be closer than you think, maybe even in the same room.
